CAFES, BARS & CLUBS
The Milk Thistle is the kind of
chic venue where Nick, Daisy
and Jay would have felt right
at home. Shame they’re all
trapped within the pages of The
Great Gatsby, isn’t it? Fear not,
because the swish cocktail bar
is regularly attended by Bristol’s
bold and beautiful. Located
in the Old City, this four-floor
townhouse is characterised
by pre-war furniture and
curious
taxidermy
deers.
Weatherbeaten
paintings
hang from the oak-panelled
walls and dusty books line
creaking shelves illuminated
by candlelight. When you’ve
adjusted to the ambience
and settled on a floor, find a
barman and place your order.
This is a great venue in which
to kill a few hours drinking
stiff spirits, crisp craft beers or
sumptuous cocktails, the kind
of concoctions that come in tall
glasses and utilise ingredients
such as spiced pear syrup and
Creme de Cacao. The elder
brother of Bristol’s Prohibition
bar, Hyde & Co, The Milk
Thistle’s four floors take a little
getting used to. Why not get the
lay of the land by spending time
on each one? With a basement
cellar, complete with original
vault door, and a capacious
attic, there’s no shortage of
intriguing nooks and crannies
to explore.
