BRISTOL ZOO
GARDENS
A visit to Bristol Zoo is a
magical experience for the
whole family. The world’s
fifth-oldest zoo has welcomed
some 90 million guests through
its gates over the years.
Whether wandering through
the tropical Butterfly Forest
or scoping the gorilla house,
you’re sure to be impressed.
A handful of lucky visitors can
take the opportunity to hand-
feed an endangered Asiatic
lion. Help one of the zoo’s
keepers prepare the lion’s
meat, before being introduced
to the majestic predator and
passing its meal through the
railings. A series of animal
talks, displays and shows
also run daily, educating
visitors on some of the zoo’s
wildlife, including red pandas,
meerkats, penguins, Western
lowland gorillas and fruit bats.
Among the zoo’s most recent
newcomers are seven rare
blue geckos. The tiny geckos,
which are protected under the
Convention on International
Trade
in
Endangered
Species, were discovered in a
consignment of chameleons,
scorpions and frogs imported
from Tanzania. Elsewhere,
there’s a water-play area
with streams and dams and
an aerial ropes course called
ZooRopia.
