SPIKE ISLAND
Spike Island might sound
like the kind of locale where
you’d run your ship aground
and
stumble
across
a
prehistoric beast, but in fact
it’s an international centre
for contemporary art. What
was once a Brooke Bond tea
packing factory has latterly
become a working space for
artists from various disciplines,
as well as a vibrant forum for
presentation and discussion;
it is, to put it simply, the nerve
centre of Bristol’s art revolution,
providing low-cost studios for
up to 70 gifted artists. The
centre also hosts a diverse
programme of exhibitions and
events, including art fairs, talks,
readings, video installations
and family activities. Working in
tandem with local and regional
partners, not to mention a host
of international institutions, the
facility is open every day of the
week. Come along and check
out the artists’ studios during
the annual Open Studios
programme, or stop by the well-
lit gallery any time of the year
to bag a canvas or painting.
The cafe is another lively hub,
the place to chill with a coffee
after catching an exhibition.
Serving a range of snacks in a
well-placed spot that overlooks
the river, the cafe specialises
in freshly-prepared, seasonal
options including sandwiches,
salads and jacket potatoes.
