Scottish National Por tr ait Galler y
1 Queen Str eet, Edinbur gh, EH2 1JD
The Scottish National Portrait
Gallery is one of Edinburgh’s
must-see
attractions,
an
enchanting exhibition that
brings visitors face to face
with Scotland’s past and
present. Iconic characters,
from the great and the good
to the mischievous and the
malfeasant, are immortalised
in the exquisite gallery which
dominates Queen Street. The
paintings that are affixed to
its walls are remarkable, but
then so’s the building itself. A
neo-gothic palace hewn from
red sandstone, it’s an iconic
edifice which has defined this
part of Edinburgh for over a
century. When the Scottish
National
Portrait
Gallery
opened its doors in 1889 it
was the world’s first dedicated
portrait gallery. Hundreds of
famous portraits of national
heroes and villains have found
a home in the gallery, including
portraits of Robert Burns,
David Hume and Sir Walter
Scott. There’s a lot of royalty
of course, but there are also
economists, philosophers and
scientists who’ll gaze down
at you as you wander from
room to room, taking in the
diverse artistic styles and the
flamboyant dress sense that’s
on display. One afternoon here
is never enough.
