Scottish National Galler y
The Mound, Edinbur gh, EH2 2EL
SCOTTISH
NATIONALGALLERY
Housed in a neoclassical building,
Scotland’s National Gallery is
as stunning as the artworks that
cling to its walls. Situated on The
Mound, the 19th century gallery,
designed by William Henry
Playfair, is stocked with examples
of Scottish art through the ages
as well as iconic works by world-
renowned artists. Open daily, the
museum offers free admission and
a breathtaking array of modern
and traditional artworks to enjoy.
Highlights include a stunning
triptych alterpiece by Bernardo
Daddi and classic works by
Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt and
Botticelli. The latter’s portrait of The
Virgin Adoring the Sleeping Christ
Child has captivated the public for
over five centuries. Famous Scots,
including Robert Burns and David
Hume, have been immortalised
in the Scottish National Portrait
Gallery, while a vibrant modern
art collection features bold works
by the likes of Henri Matisse and
Max Ernst. Check the National
Gallery’s website to discover the
latest collections that will be hosted
throughout the year. Its permanent
exhibits are typically bolstered by
the addition of leading British art
as well as works by Europe’s great
painters. In addition to occupying
The Mound, Scottish National
Galleries houses its Modern
collection on Belford Road and its
Portrait collection on Queen Street,
a short walk away.
