ARTS, CULTURE & TOURISM
SCOTTISH
STORYTELLING
CENTRE
Humans are hardwired to love
stories; they’ve kept us spellbound
and informed since the dawn of
civilisation. Scotland’s greatest
stories have their own home in
Edinburgh, dedicated to preserving
and recounting them for future
generations
and
highlighting
the pleasure of storytelling, and
traditional culture, as entertainment.
This bustling arts venue is situated
on the Royal Mile and the Centre
extends a warm welcome to all
who venture inside the vibrant
arts space. Winner of the 2018
Best Performing Arts Venue at the
Sunday Herald Culture Awards,
they showcase a year-round
programme of live storytelling,
theatre, music and dance to thrill
visitors young and old, while an
ever-changing roster of workshops
and exhibitions beg repeat visits
throughout the year. Plus, you can
discover medieval Edinburgh with
a visit to the adjacent John Knox
House, one of the oldest buildings
on the Mile, to learn of Scotland’s
Reformation. The Centre also plays
host to the Scottish International
Storytelling Festival each autumn.
Children visiting should make a
beeline for the interactive story wall
in the Storytelling Court, where
Nessie, the Gruffalo and a host
of other literary characters can be
found lurking. While the kids are
entertained, adults can enjoy fresh
roast coffee, home bakes and light
bites in the StorytellingCafé.
