LOCHCARRON
Lochcarron Visitor Centre is a
five-star visitor attraction and
shop which offers knitwear,
coats and jackets as well as
a huge selection of tartans.
Lochcarron more than earns
its name as the world’s leading
manufacturer of tartan. The
shop even claims to have
fitted kilts for such luminaries
as Sean Connery and Shrek,
although the status of the
latter as a fictional character
muddies the water somewhat.
Besides, Sir Sean is more
than enough. The visitor
centre is no stranger to high
fashion either as Vivienne
Westwood, Ralph Lauren,
Paul Smith, Burberry and
John Paul Gaultier have all
used Lochcarron cloth for
their creations at one time
or another. A tour of the
mill is a particular highlight,
allowing visitors to see
the cloth being woven and
accessories made. If you’ve
ever wondered exactly what
processes go into making one
of the world’s most distinctive
and recognisable materials,
it’s all laid bare at Lochcarron.
All that remains afterwards
is to kick back with your new
purchases and enjoy a coffee
at the visitor centre coffee
shop. Sheer bliss.
