The Barony is one of Edinburgh’s last truly
independent bars. The venue first opened as a
drinks merchant in 1896, before becoming a pub
- and it has been a staple of the Edinburgh scene
ever since. When you visit, you’ll see all the original
Victorian features, including real fireplaces, brewery
mirrors, hand-painted 19th century tiles and the
beautiful wooden bar. Loved by locals and visitors
alike, The Barony has become well known for its
delicious gastropub menu. We pride ourselves on
creating modern versions of classic pub dishes, as
well as lots of seasonal specials. Expect plenty of
local seafood, meat and veg, alongside favourites
like our famous mac & cheese and steak pies. We’re
also very proud of our drinks menu, which features
local ales, single malts, craft gins and a selection
of wines from across the world. The Barony is also
a dog-friendly pub, and we have a full license for
children up to 10pm - everyone’s welcome!

Opium is the place to dance and party in the
city’s Old Town. The lively late night venue
is open from 8pm to 3am during the week
and at weekends. It can be found nestled
on the Cowgate, just a stone’s throw from
the High Street, making it a convenient end
to a bar crawl. This is an alternative bar and
club, serving great value drinks and playing
cross-genre music on its two floors. The vibe
is grungy and urban and the decor is dark
and industrial, with a bar made from railway
sleepers. Opium has special nights for metal,
nostalgia, rock karaoke, live music and open
mic sessions – it’s a great spot to catch up and
coming alternative bands. There’s also table
football, pool and a jukebox downstairs, ideal
for those who want a break from moshing to
the banging tunes.
