Short of booking a budget flight to Bavaria, Bierkeller
is the closest you’ll get to experiencing a traditional
German beer hall. The atmospheric cellar bar,
housed in The Printworks, comes bearing all the
trappings you’d expect of a Bavarian drinking den:
German beer, German food and German music. The
sounds come courtesy of a live oompah band, while
the liquor comes straight from the source: steins of
crisp, refreshing Erdinger and Warsteiner. The beer
list is excellent, with enough pilsners and wheat
beers to suit even the most discerning of drinkers.
Will it be the Lowenbrau ABV, with its delicately bitter
aftertaste, or Timmermans Strawberry, a lively fruit
beer that goes down easy? If you’re unsure where
to start, Bierkeller’s own Premium Haus Bier makes
a good introduction. For drinkers who refuse to be
pigeon-holed, a taster paddle offers a pick and mix
selection of three speciality beers. German beer halls
aren’t known for their tranquility, and Bierkeller isn’t
about to buck that trend. On weekends, the place is
bouncing as the oompah band bust out the drinking
songs and 200-odd revellers reciprocate in between
refilling foamy steins of potent pils. Bratwurst are
served with proper German mustard and ketchup,
the way they should be, while sharing platters
come bearing a selection of smoked hotdogs and
bratwurst. Due to its popularity, booking ahead to
secure a spot in Bierkeller is advised at weekends.
The beerhall is a popular choice for birthday parties
and other celebratory events; packages include free
entry, guaranteed seating, free pretzels and a haus
stein to whet your whistle. As ice cold German beer
is delivered to your table by waitresses in Bavarian
dress, Manchester will become a distant memory.
Every month is Oktoberfest when you’re drinking in
Bierkeller, a never-ending procession of good beer
and good times with friends.
