Tucked away in Chinatown,
Hunan is one of the city’s
finest and most authentic
Chinese restaurants. Hunan,
in case you don’t know, is
a southeastern province of
China; but it also refers to a
hot and spicy mode of Chinese
cooking which the restaurant
specialises in. If you count
chillies among your favourite
foods – and loudly scoff when
your capacity for enduring the
burn is questioned – book a
table at your earliest possible
convenience. A staple of
Manchester’s foodie scene
since 2010, Hunan offers
delicious and reasonably
priced dishes for the lunch
and dinner crowd. Vegetarians
are also catered for, with
many imaginative vegetable-
based dishes on the menu.
The staff are also happy to
accommodate diners with
specially-prepared meals: just
tell them what you like and
your request will be dispatched
to the chef. Popular Hunan
dishes include Mao’s fleshy
red-braised pork, the spicy
velvet crab ‘Hunan style’
and the diced salmon head.
Brave souls can even try such
delicacies as five-spiced pig
intestines and duck neck, but
if you prefer a chilli beef stir-
fry, that’s fine.
