know, Red Chilli is the only
Chinese in town. Actually, it’s
one of two Chinese restaurants
in town to be precise, for Red
Chilli operates a brace of
establishments, one on Oxford
Road and the other on Portland
Street in the city centre. Enter
one of the bright, modern
restaurants and you’ll be greeted
by the scent of sizzling seafood,
meat, herbs and spices, cooked
to authentic Beijing and Sichuan
recipes. A lunch menu offers
one, two or three courses for
a very reasonable price, with
hungry diners entitled to up their
order to a quarter, half or whole
duck if they’ve plumped for the
poultry. Start with a traditional hot
and spicy Chinese soup before
graduating to a main course of
spicy hot poached chilli, made
with beef, pork or chicken. Red
Chilli’s main menu is extensive
and accomplished, comprising
a pleasing blend of the familiar
and the unfamiliar. Dishes like
chicken with blackbean sauce
will require no introduction; stir
fried sliced eel may be a new
one to you however. If you’re
