Swadesh is a contemporary Indian restaurant
that prides itself on the quality of its food. Five
outlets in all, dotted across Greater Manchester,
include a flagship restaurant on Portland Street in
the city centre. The decor is warm and inviting,
the hospitality is excellent and the food….well,
where to start? Swadesh’s Manchester menu is
populated with classic Indian dishes, including
succulent chicken tandoori, cooked on or off the
bone and marinated with mixed spices, yogurt,
garlic and ginger. There’s more to Swadesh than
chicken though – much more. If you thought duck
was the preserve of Chinese restaurants, think
again. Swadesh serve it Indian style, marinated in
saffron with cream and coconut milk. The lamb is
also excellent. The restaurant’s Gosht Haydrabadi
sees juicy chunks of lamb served with a yogurt,
mint and cashew nut sauce. Chilli fiends will prefer
the Lamb Jalali, infused with garlic, ginger and
aromatic Naga chilli. For those who know what
they want and want what they know, Swadesh
serves up familiar favourites in the form of balti,
korma, madras and bhuna, made with chicken,
fish, lamb, king prawn or as a vegetarian option.
A children’s menu provides a selection of milder
dishes. All through the week, Swadesh operates
a popular lunchtime buffet menu, available from
12pm-3pm. Take your pick from a plethora of
pakoras, samosas, curries and rice for a fixed
price. Alternatively, order a takeaway lunchbox,
yours for less than a fiver. Early birds who dine
between 5pm-7pm can enjoy a three-course meal
for a discounted price. With a range of function
rooms able to accommodate up to 200 guests,
Swadesh is a popular venue for birthday parties
and works outings. The restaurant also provides
an outside catering service, bringing all the flavour
of good Indian food directly to your workplace.
