Nicolls is a welcome new
addition to Dundee’s dining
scene. The trendy bar and
restaurant is situated on
Commercial Street inside a
cavernous old building that’s
been beautifully restored.
High ceilings, ornate cornices,
high windows and stout
columns give Nicolls an air of
sophistication, enhanced by the
wooden furnishings and clean
white walls. Carpets are plush
and thick, while the rest rooms
are spotless and spacious. DC
Thomson characters adorn the
walls of the bar as a nod to
Dundee’s heritage. It’s clear
that a lot of thought has gone
into designing every last aspect
of this lounge and restaurant.
Nicolls serves breakfast, lunch
and dinner all through the week,
with the bar filling up quickly
on weekends. Booking’s not
essential but is advised; by
suppertime, tables can be at a
premium as the restaurant fills
up with professionals spilling
out of the adjacent offices. The
menu consists of hearty pub
favourites including steak pie,
scampi and Louisiana chicken.
Portions are generous and
service is prompt. Fajitas are
a speciality, while the macaroni
cheese is as satisfying as it
is simple. Nicolls is a historic
building that’s now enjoying a
new lease of life.
