GLASGOW
BOTANIC GARDENS
Whatever the weather and
whatever the occasion, Glasgow
Botanic Gardens is a great day out.
Be it a family excursion or a first
date, the gardens have the power
to captivate and entertain for hours
at a time. Housed in the West End
of Glasgow, the gardens comprise
a series of glass houses, the finest
of which being the Kibble Palace.
Recently restored, the curvilinear
greenhouse was designed by
John Kibble and is stocked with
wondrous exotic plants of all kinds.
While most visitors will be happy
to amble through the sprawling
gardens at their own pace, there’s
also the prospect of a guided
Health Walk to enjoy. Held every
Thursday at 1pm, the one-hour
walk takes in the Botanic Gardens’
major highlights before finishing
with tea and biscuits in the library.
General guided tours of the facility
are also available, resuming in
May of each year and running
through the summer. Founded in
1817, Glasgow Botanic Gardens
is populated with rare species of
shrubs, climbing plants and flowers
as well as magnificent statues,
carvings and other features, the
grandest being the reflective multi-
facet mirror in the Kibble Palace.
Horticultural highlights include a
splendid collection of New Zealand
and Australian ferns that have lived
in the gardens for over 120 years.
Beautiful and serene, an afternoon
at Glasgow Botanic Gardens is an
afternoon well spent.
