HAIRDRESSER’S

The Old Hairdresser’s is a quirky, bohemian bar that
dares to be different. Situated on Renfield Lane, the bar
forms a vibrant event space that champions the city’s
alternative music scene. If it’s experimental, left field
or avant garde, odds are you’ll find it here. Music, art,
poetry and spoken word can all be experienced within
the cavern-like bar. The Old Hairdresser’s gives a voice
to the voiceless and represents the underrepresented:
women’s groups, socialist speakers, activists and
esoteric authors. If you’re enamoured with drinking
dens that possess an anti-establishment stance, The
Old Hairdresser’s deserves to become your favourite
new bar. While its regulars knock back their favourite
tipples, authors can be found reciting passages from
their latest tomes, bands can be heard kicking out the
jams and indie flicks can be seen on the big screen.
It’s the sort of place where you never know quite what
you’re going to get. Arrive bearing an open mind and
nursing a thirst and you’re sure to go home quenched
and contented.

Located in a beautiful building on Miller Street,
the intriguingly named The Spiritualist looks like
a champagne bar, though it’s really a restaurant.
Characterised by muted shades, stylishly lit tables,
expensive fittings and great nosh, The Spiritualist is
an upmarket establishment serving everything from
real scampi and chips to Gressingham duck and gin
cured salmon. Executive Head Chef Mark Stocks has
crafted a menu that owes much to local independent
suppliers including Bernard Corrigan Fishmongers,
and the attention to detail is to be admired. To
complement your meal, there’s a good selection
of white, red and rosé wines, including Spanish
Chardonnays and Chilean Sauvignon Blancs. Relax
amid the grand surroundings and after your meal
drop into the well-stocked bar for a well-earned tipple.
The gantry is loaded with craft gins, artisanal mezcals
and sought-after cognacs – everything you need in
other words to have a very merry time.
