Mammacita is the new kid in town – in the
town of St Andrews to be precise. The
Mexican cantina, billed as a tequila and
mezcal bar, serves up an authentic slice of
South American cuisine, washed down with
spirits that are guaranteed to get the party
started and keep the good times rolling. Pure
gold tequila and ice cold margaritas are the
order of the day at the informal cantina where
walk-ins are favoured over booking ahead;
just rock up and if there’s a wait for a table,
you’ll be invited to make yourself at home at
the bar. As an informal eatery, Mammacita
champions Mexican street food, made using
recipes that aren’t from round these parts, but
which are perfect for warming the parts that
the Scottish climate dulls. By the time you’re
a couple of tequilas and a chile relleno to the
good, you’ll be glowing all over and feeling
great. There’s carnitas, tinga – slow-cooked
chicken – baja fish, carne asada and black
bean & quinoa. A tortas menu features such
offerings as the Pambazo, made with salsa
dipped chorizo, mozzarella and potato, and
the Cubana, loaded with ham, beef, chicken,
chile jack cheese and chipotle. There’s a
kids menu too, for those who can’t handle
the heat that pervades some of Mammacita’s
spicier dishes. In their place, the little ones
can savour cheese and tomato quesadillas
and tacos that they can build themselves. All
through the week, the cantina throws themed
deals and special days to entice locals to
step inside and live a little. Margarita Monday
needs no explanation, while the cocktail
masterclasses will teach you to treat Mexico’s
potent national spirits with a newfound
respect.
