Mamma Roma is one of Edinburgh’s best kept

secrets. Set on Antigua Street, just around the

corner from the historic Royal Mile, this restaurant

is everything a good Italian should be: warm, cosy

and welcoming, with great, authentic food to boot!

Though it’s not the most striking of buildings on the

exterior, Mamma Roma’s interior is immediately

relaxing, while the staff are eager and attentive.

It’s a small, quiet restaurant, which means you’ll

always get good table service and be made to feel

like you’re the only customer who matters. The

menu is equally appealing, whether you go for

the usual a lá carte or the pre-theatre. It contains

a good selection of both pizzas and pastas as

well as main dishes, and the prices are more

than reasonable. For a cosy stop in Edinburgh

with superb service and delicious, homely Italian

cuisine, Mamma Roma is the perfect choice.

La Piazza is an Italian which offers traditional

Mediterranean cuisine in a relaxed and friendly

modern restaurant. This is a consistently popular

choice with Edinburgers and is especially

busy after sporting events such as the rugby

at Murrayfield. The a la carte menu features a

whopping 17 pizzas which can also be ordered

as calzones, but allow an extra 15 minutes for

          cooking. Expect excellent presentation, excellent

food and excellent service. A busy atmosphere

is typical at La Piazza and for those in a rush

or with evening plans, a set pre-theatre menu is

the perfect choice. Under the ownership of Tony

Pia, the restaurant retains a distinct personality,

charm and sense of humour. This was perfectly

exemplified during the Edinburgh Trams debacle

when ‘pothole pizzas’ (a pizza with a hole in

the middle) were featured on the menu. Sadly

          discontinued, but never forgotten.
