Miro’s Cantina Mexicana may be a long way
from home, yet its cuisine is as authentic as that
of any native Mexican restaurant. Edinburgh’s
bustling Rose Street is an unlikely spot for such
an establishment, but step through its doors and
the hum of urban life is replaced by the sizzle of
steaks and prawns upon the grill. For 20 years the
restaurant has been adroitly serving a mixture of
traditional and contemporary Mexican dishes,
from fajitas and enchiladas to more adventurous
offerings such as Slow-Cooked Lamb with Mexican
Honey & Sweet Chilli, washed down with zingy
Mexican cocktails. The interior of this cosy cantina
is vibrant, with bright colours and warm furnishings
contributing to the lively atmosphere. On long, lazy
summer evenings, the restaurant’s terrace is the
place to be, providing as authentic an experience
as you’re likely to find this far north of Mexico.

Wahaca is a Mexican chain diner that’s prized for
its industrial decor, contemporary cuisine and fun
take on traditional street food. The firm’s first foray
into Scotland is a bright and cheerful premises
on St Andrews Street, one where crunchy tacos,
sizzling fajitas and sharp margaritas are the order
of the day. This is a walk-in restaurant, but that
doesn’t mean you’ll always be able to count on
getting a table; word is spreading fast about
Wahaca’s novel take on Mexican cuisine. There’s
a real buzz about this place; inside the air is thick
with the chatter of happy diners and the aroma of
beef, chicken, pulled pork and roasted peppers.
Order a selection of shareable dishes that include
classic tacos, quesadillas, tostadas and taquitos.
Highlights include sweet potato and feta taquitos
and grilled ancho chicken with fresh guacamole.
It’s simple food but it’s brilliantly done.
