          Voted Edinburgh’s Best Mexican Restaurant,

Mariachi is the real deal. The restaurant is cosy and

colourful and the cuisine is mouth-watering and

eminently satisfying, be it a stuffed burrito, crispy

nachos or a spicy chilli con carne. Tex-Mex dishes

are a speciality, including freshly-grilled fajitas

and creamy quesadillas. As all true lovers of Latin

food will attest, the best antidote to the mouthfuls

of spicy chicken and beef is repeated swigs of

refreshing Mexican beer, served with a citrus twist.

The restaurant, situated in the Old Town, is open

for lunch, while a pre-theatre menu features two or

three courses for a fixed price. Whichever time of

day you pop in, the menu placed at your table will

have a spice rating, ranging between one and four

chillis. The former is rated as “a little tingle”, while

the latter is for diehard chilli fiends only – keep that

          cerveza on standby.

          Topolabamba markets itself as Glasgow’s

favourite Mexican restaurant and now it has a

location in Edinburgh as well, on Lothian Road.

The Topolabamba experience is a mix of classic

Mexican dishes and authentic street food in a rustic,

          almost industrial-recovered venue. Think exposed

brickwork, brushed metal, reclaimed wood and

functional fixtures and fittings. Tacos and tostadas are

particular favourites amongst the regular patrons and

with most dishes designed to share between 2 to 3

people, Topolabamba makes for a great social dining

experience. And if Topolabamba’s main courses

and name don’t prove to be mouthful enough, the

evening can be concluded with supersweet churros.

The dessert of deep fried dough is a mainstay of

Spanish and Portuguese cooking and has found its

way to Auld Reekie via Mexico. It’s sure to fit right in

          here in Scotland.
